About Us
Who are we?
The First Gen Project is a Nonprofit organization founded in May 2024. Our services are specific to first-generation low-income minority students who are interested in applying for higher education. Our free services range from managing the common app site to helping students draft their college admissions essays.
Our Mission
29% of students have parents with no post-secondary education and 54% of undergraduates identify as being first-generation. Our mission is to increase the percentage of first gen students who pursue higher education and competitive fields. We provide resources, tools, and a community for these students to receive constant support through this new transition from high school to college.
Our Services
College Essay Prep
Free college essay prep focuses on helping students either brainstorm, structure, organize, or proofread their admissions essays
Common app Prep
Free Common app prep is meant for students applying to college using the Common app. We understand students may struggle navigating the website so that is why we are here to help.
Q & A
Free Q & A is a scheduled session in case students have any general questions about the college admissions process or what to expect once committed.
Meet The CEO
Sherley Tejada
"Sherley is a first-generation Afro-Latina born and raised in the Bronx. Currently, she attends the John Jay College of Criminal Justice majoring in forensic science and minoring in philosophy. Sherley has been working with students from middle school to high school for about 5 years. She started off working at organizations like Heroes Youth Mentorship, the Double Discovery program at Columbia University and CUNY Bridge for All. Now, she is a researcher and a independent tutor and mentor focusing on underrepresented students within her community.
“ Transitioning from high school to college was not smooth. I wish I had more support and community so I was comfortable to ask questions as a first generation. This is why I created the First Gen Project so that students who share a similar story will continue to have free support”- Sherley Tejada, CEO
